Standard security features

With AOL broadband, customers are given a range of security features to enable safety and security online (Find out more about Internet security). These include:

  • McAfee® Personal Firewall Plus: this helps keep your computer and home network safe from hackers and viruses. (Read our guide to Firewalls)
  • Email Anti-virus scanning: the AOL service automatically scans all incoming emails and attachments for viruses and other infections
  • Spam controls: AOL's advanced spam filter blocks known junk email. (Read our guide to Spam protection)
  • Parental control and AOL Guardian: AOL Broadband helps you monitor and control your children's use of the Internet. You can set the parental controls to offer a different level of security for each member of the family, allowing your children more freedom to roam the internet as they grow older. (Read our guide to Protecting your children online)
  • AOL Computer Check-up: Monitors and corrects a variety of AOL-related and general computer-related problems to help improve the performance of your system. AOL also regularly checks your security settings to ensure that they’re up to date

We have been with AOL for a long time, about 6 years now. They tried to take the monthly payment by the direct debit, but failed as they used the wrong details. I heard nothing of this matter, except some very odd phone calls from abroad who may or may not have been AOL or telephone scammers.

Last week, AOL charged me 8 times my bill of £47.95. This money has been confirmed 'earmarked' for AOL by my bank's card services but AOL deny having the money even though AOL themselves have supplied me with transaction codes!!

The money has not been returned to my account. The bank say they cannot help and AOL are refusing to help.

I will be calling tomorrow for my MAC code as I am leaving AOL.

awful service, im paying 14.99 a month and wanted to see if i could get a better deal, the first customer service man said he could give me free calls but when i got put through to the verification lady (who didn't speak English very well) I was told that I couldn't have this offer. I have broadband, but can't have a free laptop as it wouldn't work in my area - what rubbish is that??? Will leave AOL and move to another provider - Sep 3 2008 6:16PM
