Q - Dear Michael,

I recently upgraded my Windows operating system from XP to Vista, but I can no longer connect to the internet at home.

Please help,

Alex Georgiou, via email

Our expert says...

If you connect to your modem using USB, but your modem doesn’t have a Vista compatible driver, you won’t be able to connect - as you’ve found.

While you might be able to update the driver from the manufacturer’s website, if you can’t get on the internet at home you obviously won’t be able to do this.

Check to see if your modem has an ethernet socket too, in which case you can use this to connect your computer - it’s faster than USB too.

However, if it doesn’t, and you’re not able to update the driver for Vista, then you’ll have to buy a new modem. I would recommend getting one that connects via ethernet, or a wireless router so that you can without cables altogether.
