Broadband speeds will lead innovation
(02-01-08) - Improving the connection speeds and reliability of the UK’s broadband services will “drive innovation” according to the Internet Service Providers’ Association (ISPA).
Developments in the past year have already seen an increase in the numbers of people who are able to watch TV over the internet or download missed TV shows, said the UK’s internet service provider trade association.
And with plans to develop a next generation broadband network in the near future - which would allow massively faster download speeds as well as far more reliable connections - the ISPA predicted even more broadband TV over the coming year, as well as an increase in business-orientated technologies in the home.
A spokesman for the association said: “Broadband has made web technologies - such as streaming media, telephone over the internet, downloading movies and music and also consuming movies and music - [possible].
"There are developments going on all the time to improve connectivity, and that has a consequence of driving technological innovation on the content and applications side. So, there's potential to see more remote working; there's a variety of different things that can happen."
Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “broadband has become one of the essential amenities in our homes, and therefore download speed, and more importantly a reliable connection, have become crucial to the daily user. As ISPs work to develop such connections, and as parts of the UK gain access to speeds of up to 50Mb this year, we will definitely see an increase in technology take-up as well as many new applications emerging.”
