BT Broadband 20Mb broadband speed boost

BT Broadband has launched a new 20Mb broadband service, coming to consumers across the UK from early summer.

The free upgrade is already available to BT Broadband (www.BT.com) business customers connected to selected exchanges, while the service will be offered to around 10 million homes and businesses - representing 40 per cent of the UK - by summer 2009.

BT will then increase coverage of the new, faster service to 55 per cent of homes and businesses by 2010 if there is enough demand.

Where available, the new 20Mb broadband speed will be offered to all new customers. However, existing BT customers will have to sign a new 12 month contract to take advantage of the free upgrade.

As well as increasing download speeds, the new package will offer uploads at speeds of up to 1Mb.

BT is the UK’s largest broadband provider with 4.8 million customers. More than 60,000 BT customers have already trialled its new service using the ADSL2+ technology that is now being rolled out to more areas.

A number of other UK broadband providers already deliver speeds of up to 20Mb and higher, with Virgin Media (www.VirginMedia.com) offering up to 50Mb broadband speeds over its cable network - currently the fastest package in the UK.
