BT (www.BT.com) mobile broadband is mobile wireless broadband access from the UK's best-known internet provider. But what exactly does BT Mobile Broadband provide, and is it the right option for you?
BT's mobile broadband packages give you the freedom to access the internet from your laptop when you're on the move. You won’t be tied to your home broadband connection and, depending on the package you choose, you won’t even have to sign a contract. BT allows you to pre-pay for your usage, and top up conveniently online.
BT mobile broadband pay as you go
BT mobile broadband is a pay-as-you-go service. You just pay a one-off price for a BT dongle, plug it into your laptop’s USB port and pay for your internet usage as you go along.
BT (www.BT.com) gives you 1GB of free usage to get you started, which allows you to download up to 48 photos or 300 emails, or browse the internet for around 400 minutes. After you've used this allowance, every 1MB of information you download will cost you 10p, or you can save money by buying 1GB for £10 or 3GB for £15 in one go. You can pay for your usage by topping up your account online or at high street shops displaying the Top Up sign.
BT mobile broadband coverage
BT mobile broadband provides download speeds up to 1.8Mb across 80% of the UK, and up to 7.2Mb in some areas. The speed of your connection will also depend on how many other people are using the network, how close you are to the local mobile phone mast and whether or not any obstructions - such as buildings and even trees - are blocking your mobile signal. Visit www.BT.com to check mobile broadband speeds and coverage in your area.
There is no monthly fee, but the price you pay for the BT dongle will depend on whether you are already a BT customer: if you're not, this one-off cost is higher.
There is also the option of bundling your home phone, home broadband and mobile broadband packages with BT's Home & Away deal. For this, you'll have to pay monthly for your home phone and broadband services but you'll save at least £20 on the cost of a BT mobile broadband dongle.
If you're not already a BT (www.BT.com) customer and you'd like to take up the Home & Away bundle offer, BT will connect a new phone line for free. You will need to get a MAC code from your current provider in order to switch broadband providers, and you could be connected to your new BT package within five days.
You don't need to be a BT customer to sign up to BT mobile broadband.
