BT Openzone slashes wifi costs

Garnet Roach garnet@consumerchoices.co.uk

Wireless internet provider BT Openzone launched a new price structure yesterday, cutting wifi rates by up to 50 per cent (16-10-08).

After the loss of The Cloud’s 6,500 hotspots, BT Openzone (www.BT.com) customers will be happy to hear that the provider has also added a further 2,500 hotspots to its range.

"Connections are often faster and more reliable than mobile broadband"

BT Openzone still offers vouchers to those wanting one-off wireless access, but has revamped its monthly subscriptions, cutting headline rates and bringing some costs down to as little as 0.5 pence per minute in some places.

  • BT Openzone Original offers 500 minutes on BT Openzone UK for just £5 a month (plus VAT). Additional usage is charged at 10p per minute in the UK and abroad and a 12 month contract applies
  • BT Openzone Together offers “unlimited” Openzone minutes (a 3GB fair usage limit applies) and 500 UK T-Mobile minutes for £12.50 a month (plus VAT). Additional usage is charged at 10p per minute in the UK and abroad and an 18 month contract applies
  • BT Openzone Global offers “unlimited” Openzone minutes (a 3GB fair usage limit applies),500 UK T-Mobile minutes and 500 international roaming minutes for £28 a month (plus VAT). Additional usage is charged at 10p per minute in the UK and abroad and a 12 month contract applies
  • BT Openzone per Minute prices have been cut by 25 per cent to just 15p per minute (plus VAT) on a 12 month contract

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “Although wireless hotspots don’t offer the same sort of freedom as mobile broadband - which works anywhere that there’s a mobile phone signal - wifi still has a lot to offer.

“Connections are often faster and more reliable than mobile broadband and with data costing only 10p per minute internationally - far less than mobile broadband roaming prices - BT Openzone’s many thousands of hotspots across the UK and abroad are offering better value than ever before.”
