Cable broadband guide

Cable broadband from Virgin Media (www.VirginMedia.com) offers some of the fastest download speeds in the UK, with 10Mb, 20Mb and even 50Mb broadband packages.

If you live in one of the 12.6 million UK homes connected to the cable broadband network, you could ditch your traditional landline and get your home broadband from Virgin Media instead. As well as bundled deals that include home phone as well as digital TV and even mobile broadband, Virgin Media is the only provider to offer standalone broadband - without even the need for a landline.

Why choose cable broadband?

Virgin Media’s 50Mb broadband package is the UK’s fastest advertised speed, but the ISP also offers the fastest actual download speeds. Ofcom research in July found that Virgin Media offered an average speed of 8.1Mb to 8.7Mb on its 10Mb L Broadband package, compared to 4.1Mb to 5.1Mb from O2 Broadband (www.O2.co.uk), the nearest copper wire ADSL provider.

However, BT Broadband (www.BT.com), which offers broadband over standard phone lines, is currently investing billions in developing a country-wide, next generation, fibre network with the aim of providing superfast broadband to 40% of the UK, with speeds of up to 40Mb and even 100Mb.

Broadband bundles

Virgin Media offers the widest selection of telecoms products on the market, allowing you to get your home broadband, phone, landline and digital TV from one provider as well as mobile broadband and even mobile phone services.

While you can save money by bundling your home telecoms in this way, you shouldn’t add extra services just because they're cheap - if you don’t use them, they’ll still just be a waste of money.
