Broadband provider Easynet Connect has announced that it will begin offering speeds of up to 40Mb over existing copper wire networks.

The first of Easynet Connect’s (www.EasynetConnect.co.uk) customers to be able to sign up to the new trial will be small and medium businesses within 1km of the ISP’s 1,200 exchanges in a move that Easynet Connect said “represents a breakthrough for small to medium sized businesses which would previously have been unable to afford such high data speeds through a leased-line or fibre connection”.

"A breakthrough for small to medium sized businesses which would previously have been unable to afford such high data speeds"

The new service will use the same backbone as EasyNet Connect’s existing 20Mb service but by transmitting data at higher frequencies, and creating symmetrical, uncontended connections, will be able to double top speeds.

Chris Stening, Easynet Connect managing director, said: “By continuing to push the boundaries of what copper networks can deliver, we are able to bring the very best internet connectivity to as many businesses as possible.

“Achieving 40Mb proves that with the right technology and innovation, copper-based networks can deliver the quality of internet connection which UK businesses demand and deserve. Businesses are increasingly reliant upon their internet connection.”

Easynet Connect has pledged to install the service for eligible customers within 30 days of purchase - far quicker than most equivalent services.

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “This is great news for small and medium businesses within reach of Easynet Connect’s exchanges. High speed internet connections and dedicated business broadband packages are becoming increasingly important for competition, and an offer like this could give eligible companies a real edge over their rivals.”
