Eight EU countries ahead of the US in broadband
(25-03-08) - Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden were all reported as world broadband leaders with more than 30 per cent broadband penetration, according to a new report.
The European Commission’s 13th Progress Report on the Single Telecoms Market also said that the United Kingdom, Belgium, Luxembourg and France also now all had higher broadband penetration than America’s 22.1 per cent in July 2007.
An additional 19 million broadband lines were added in the bloc last year - the equivalent of 50,000 households every day.
Overall European broadband penetration stood at 20 per cent in 2007, but Viviane Reding, the EU’s Telecoms Commissioner, said: “The job is not yet done. Only by opening up the single market for business will Europe become competitive and will consumers benefit from a wide choice of rich and affordable services.”
Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “Although the UK is doing well in terms of broadband penetration, it still isn’t at the top of the pack.
“Many people are still holding onto their old dial-up internet connections, but broadband is now as cheap, if not cheaper than dial-up, and with money-saving deals like ‘free broadband’ and ‘free line rental’ there’s never been a better time to switch to broadband.”
