Internet is booming on mobiles

Instant news and sport boost mobile phone internet use

Instant news, sport and weather reports are fuelling the growth of mobile phone internet services.

Brits are increasingly turning to internet access on their mobile phones to get the latest news, sport and weather according to market research group Nielsen (www.nielsen-online.com )

In the third quarter of 2008, 7.3 million Brits accessed the internet on their mobiles, that’s a 25% rise from the second quarter of 2008 (5.8 million), found Nielsen’s Mobile Media View.

Kent Ferguson, senior analyst at Nielsen, said: “This highlights the advantage of mobile when it comes to immediacy; people often need fast, instant access to weather or sports news and mobile can obviously satisfy this, wherever they are.”

While functional sites are favourites on mobiles, top websites on PCs continue to focus on e-commerce or broader entertainment.

Top websites for mobile browsing include:

  • BBC News
  • BBC Weather
  • Sky Sports

Websites with a much stronger reach on PCs are:

  • Google search
  • Ebay

Earlier this week Ofcom released its 2008 Consumer Experience report that found that increased take-up of broadband will be limited by a lack of growth in the figures for personal computer ownership.

PC ownership has been steady at 70% of the population between 2006 and 2008. “If this continues, it is likely to limit any further growth in the take-up of internet at home, which has remained at 65% for 2007 and 2008,” Ofcom noted.

Michael Phillips, product director at BroadbandChoices.co.uk said: “It’s great to see that consumers are using internet on the go to get the latest news and weather.

But some of the greatest benefits of the internet are entertainment, live streaming and music downloading as well as online shopping. For these, it’s essential to have a suitable internet connection speed and download limit.”
