Mobile broadband coverage checkers

Mobile broadband coverage depends on your provider's network, the number of people sharing the connection and your location. 3 Mobile Broadband (www.Three.co.uk) has the most extensive 3G coverage in the UK, with over 90% of the population covered. O2 Mobile Broadband (www.O2.co.uk) and Virgin Mobile (www.VirginMedia.com) as close seconds, with over 85% coverage.

Check coverage and speeds for your postcode:

Of note, other factors such as the number of users connecting in your area, your distance from the mobile broadband mast and even buildings in between will also interfere. To maximise your mobile broadband speeds, we suggest you connect close to a window or in an open space, if at all possible.

Truth about mobile broadband speeds

Mobile broadband providers typically advertise eye-watering headline speeds. In practise, actual speeds often fall between 1Mb and 4Mb per second. 4G mobile broadband offers the potential for actual speeds between 15Mb and 30Mb (with a maximum of up to 100Mb) however, it's not yet available in the shops.

Quite average in fact. I like in the countryside on the outskirts on Bristol, and reception is poor except when I head into town. It's handy when I'm out and about, but not a substitute for proper home broadband. - Dec 31 2009 10:03AM
I used to be with Three Mobile Broadband, on a rolling 1 month contract. Actual speeds were variable, and generally lower than than advertised! Faster than dial-up though. My advice: don't set your expectations too high. - Sep 29 2009 1:19PM
