Mobile broadband: T-Mobile unleashes shared router

New mobile broadband customers with T-mobile will receive a free wireless router. The “share dock” enables up to three people to use one mobile internet connection at a time.

T-Mobile's (www.t-mobile.co.uk) “share dock” is available free to new mobile broadband customers on an 18-month contract which has a £20 monthly tariff. The device functions like a fixed-line wireless router when used in conjunction with WiFi-enabled laptops.

"People want to share the mobile connection with friends and family"

Richard Warmsley, head of internet and entertainment at T-Mobile UK said: “One of the key insights that came back from users was the desire to share the [mobile broadband] connection with friends and family.”

According to research by PCPro (www.pcpro.co.uk), T-Mobile was marginally the fastest mobile broadband network in London with an average speed of just over 2Mbps.

Earlier this month 3 launched a mobile broadband router, priced at £69.99. There has been no price information given out for the share dock as a standalone for existing T-Mobile mobile broadband customers.

The T-Mobile £20 tariff has a 3GB fair usage monthly download allowance.

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “Routers for mobile broadband are a great development for families and shared households. But be sure you know what your monthly download limit is.

“It’s a good idea to download our free Broadband Download Monitor which will help you keep a track of your usage each month.”
