BT broadband's (www.BT.com) new fibre optic broadband network is now available to more than 1.5 million homes and businesses across the country.

The UK’s biggest broadband provider said that it was now running at an average connection rate of 100,000 premises a week.

BT is rolling out its Infinity packages at an impressive rate

The company is investing £2.5 billion in its fibre optic network in order to bring speeds of up to 40Mb broadband to two-thirds of the UK by 2015.

BT Infinity offers the cheapest superfast broadband on the market, starting at just £19.99 a month. Infinity Option 1 gives you an up to 40Mb connection, with 2Mb uploads and a 40GB monthly download allowance.

Option 2, which costs £24.99 a month, comes with speeds of up to 40Mb, massive 10Mb uploads and an “unlimited broadband” download allowance, subject to a fair usage policy.

BT’s new network uses fibre-to-the-cabinet technology to deliver faster broadband, so copper wires will still deliver your internet connection from the street-side cabinet to your home. This does mean that there could be some slowing down of your connection over the copper wires, but BT is guaranteeing a minimum download speed of 15Mb.

Because it still uses copper wires for part of your line, you will still need a BT landline for £11.54 a month - though this will rise to £12.04 in October.

Overall, BT added 96,000 new broadband customers over the last quarter, taking its total broadband customer base to a massive 5.2 million.

Michael Phillips, Broadbandchoices.co.uk product director, said: “BT is rolling out its Infinity packages at an impressive rate, with hundreds of new exchanges set to be upgraded by summer 2011.

“But if you can’t wait for BT Infinity to land in your area, you should consider Virgin Media (www.Virginmedia.com). It already offers speeds of up to 50Mb broadband to more than half the country and will be launching an even faster 100Mb broadband package by the end of the year.”
