Free laptops from AOL

Free laptops from AOL

Customers who pre-registered for the free Dell laptops being offered by AOL and Carphone Warehouse have finally been able to claim on their offer as the promotion went live this week. (visit www.aolbroadband.co.uk/free-lap-top)

The deal has proved so popular that the original order of 100,000 laptops has now been boosted to 160,000 to cope with expected demand.

The laptop comes with Microsoft Vista Home Basic Edition, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, Intel Celeron 540 Processor, Wi-Fi Wireless Ready a DVD rewriter and a 15.4 inch screen. But customers attracted by the deal need to think about more than the specifications of their new laptop.

The offer is subject to signing a mammoth, two year contract so anyone interested needs to be sure that the broadband package they will be tied into meets their needs.

It costs £19.99 a month and customers will get an up to 8Mb connection with a 40MB download allowance and a free wireless router. They will also have AOL’s “pay-as-you-go” Talk package.

So is it worth it?

Although anyone signing a 24-month contract needs to be cautious, for the right kind of user this is a very attractive package. Many people have only basic requirements when it comes to their broadband package; browsing the internet, sending emails with the occasional photo and downloading music or using an instant messenger now and then.

However, they should still think about the better offers they will undoubtedly miss out on over the space of two years, and weigh this up against getting a new laptop.

Any excessive downloaders, or people who spend a lot of time gaming online, for example, should probably look elsewhere for a package better suited to those needs.

But anyone with basic broadband requirements could do very well by getting themselves a free laptop, worth around £500. And if they want higher hardware specifications, they also have the option of upgrading to a 120GB hard drive for £49.99 or 2GB memory and 1520 Core 2 Duo processor for £149.99.
