Free local calls from TalkTalk

All TalkTalk customers will benefit from free local calls at any time of day from 1 May, the provider has announced.

TalkTalk Broadband (www.TalkTalk.co.uk) said that 70 per cent of calls made by its customers are currently local calls.

"Up to 90 per cent of our customers’ calls will be made for free"

From 2 June, calls made to 0845 and 0870 numbers will also be free.

Wendy Becker, TalkTalk managing director, said: “At TalkTalk we’re always looking to give customers a better deal, especially in these uncertain times. Given that 70 per cent of all the UK calls that our customers make are to local numbers, making those calls free will give a significant boost to our customers who want to keep in touch with their neighbours, friends and local services.

“Combined with no charges for calls to 0845/0870 numbers, up to 90 per cent of our customers’ calls will be made for free.”

TalkTalk offers one of the UK’s cheapest broadband and home phone bundles, with up to 8Mb broadband, a 40GB download allowance and free evening and weekend calls to UK landlines, plus line rental for a total of just £17.74 a month. And this will soon include anytime local calls and 0845/0870 numbers.

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “Giving its customers free local and 0845/0870 calls will help to take the sting out of the price increases that TalkTalk will be implementing elsewhere.

“From mid-April TalkTalk’s line rental will go up from £10.50 a month to £11.25 and call connection fees will also increase from 6.85p per chargeable call to 8p.”

As a loyal TalkTalk customer I am furious that nobody contacted me regarding FREE daytime calls on the Essentials package. I was still on the Talk International & weekend package in order to get free Broadband, despite never having made an international call!! Had I not received a leaflet advertising for new customers I would still know nothing about it. Having this month alone paid approx.£13 for daytime & 0845 Numbers which I understand are also now free, you can imagine how much extra I have needlessly paid since May. Why when I was phoned by someone from customer services as a courtesy call approx 4 months ago did they not tell me about the new essentials package?. Why are you not looking after loyal customers? Why when I am sent a paper bill monthly was this new package not mentioned. It appears to me that LOYAL customers are subsidising TALKTALK so that you can offer great deals to new customers. you can change your contract give them a call and see if you can go to my talktalk which is new plan if you can you can then use speed boost which cost £4 but this will not cost your more as when you change you will pay less - Apr 14 2009 5:47PM
I already get free daytime & evening local calls, as I am on the Talk Global anytime package, so the changes on 1st may won't make any difference to me, although the free 0845/0870 calls will help. I will still be paying more than some for the same features now, as I am on an 18 month contract and my rate was already fixed last year. - Apr 12 2009 7:23PM
