Broadband provider tests next-generation mobile service on superfast fibre network.

It’s already the UK’s fastest broadband provider, but now its sights are set on next-generation mobile services too.

Virgin Media has been testing 4G technology based on its superfast fibre network, which could lead it to bid for spectrum in an auction of futureproof frequencies expected to take place this year.

We’re looking forward to extending our 4G trials to include a consumer trial over the coming months

The cable provider is looking to develop a UK wireless network, using small Wi-Fi transmitters linked to its superfast broadband infrastructure. It could pave the way for mobile data transfer up to six times faster than current 3G services.

A spokesperson said: “People are using their smartphones, tablets and laptops to do more online and stay connected wherever they are. There’s a huge challenge to meet this growing demand for connectivity and we’re looking at ways to put the power of our fibre optic network where people need it most, both inside and outside the home.”

In December, Virgin Media conducted a private test of the technology needed to provide 4G services in Oxford Street, central London. Similar trials have been carried out by mobile giant Vodafone in more rural parts of the country.

The small cell technology works in the same kind of way as Wi-Fi, transmitting high-quality signals from a physical broadband network, but covers a much wider area reaching hundreds of metres in every direction.

But unlike Wi-Fi service, a roll-out of 4G technology will need some licensed spectrum. Virgin Media is likely to bid for some of the spectrum being auctioned by the government later this year.

The spokesperson added: “We’re working closely with partners across the UK to develop our proven Wi-Fi solution and our recent 4G trial proved the capability of our small cell solution. We’re looking forward to extending our 4G trials to include a consumer trial over the coming months.”

Meanwhile, Virgin Media is planning to double the broadband speeds of over four million of its customers, and is boosting its top speed to 120Mb. Starting in February, the upgrade programme will continue over 18 months and is expected to finish around mid-2013.
