The future (for Wanadoo) is Orange Broadband

After starting out as Freeserve and changing to its current name only last year, Wanadoo Broadband is about to undergo yet another makeover. France Telecom is spending €200 million on changing the ISP’s name to Orange Broadband, merging with its mobile phone operation, and we’ll be seeing these changes over the next month or so.

Orange Awards / Accreditations

Orange were awarded the Best Consumer ISP 2006. An ISPA spokesperson said: "The judges considered Wanadoo [now Orange] to offer a “very attractive product package” with a great variety of value-added extras for their consumers. The judges were particularly impressed with Wanadoo’s [now Orange's] innovative ‘Livebox’ product, which offers wireless connectivity and VoIP to Wanadoo’s [now Orange's] users. Wanadoo’s [now Orange's] consideration for the security of its customers was noted by the standard of its anti-abuse service and a strong commitment to the protection of children online.” (This was awarded when Orange were branded as Wanadoo)

What does this mean for me?

If you’re a current Wanadoo customer, you’ll carry on as normal. Your Wanadoo email address won’t change and your service will continue to work in the same way. This also applies if you have a Wanadoo Livebox. Your contract and the way you pay for your services will also remain the same.

Orange Broadband will be launching a range of new services and price plans, which you can take advantage of whether you’re a current or new customer. Orange Broadband is remaining tight-lipped on exactly what these new goodies will be, but with only a few weeks (maximum) until the launch, you won’t have to wait long to find out. Rumours have been circulating that they will include superfast broadband for £10 a month.

Broadband market experts are predicting that Orange Broadband’s new deals will include incentives for current customers to stay loyal rather than switching to the likes of TalkTalk’s rather tempting ‘free broadband’ package.

What’s the future of Orange Broadband?

France Telecom is reportedly considering rolling out a fixed line and mobile combination deal, along with a broadband phone product that tells you when you receive emails. These form part of the communication giant’s NExT (New Experience in Telecom services) proposals, which combine to offer what FT calls “a universe of services that are both high value and simple”.

To industry insiders, the plans for Orange Broadband look set to lead the way for the rest of the UK market. It seems that, within the next few years, UK consumers will be able to merge all of their household communication needs - home phone, mobile, broadband and TV – into one manageable package.
