The type of provider you sign up to will determine whether or not you'll have to pay a connection fee.
If you're simply switching from one ADSL copper wire provider to another - both of which use BT broadband's (www.BT.com) telephone network - then you might get free connection. But if you're signing up for your first ever broadband package, you might have to pay for your internet installation.
Also, certain types of broadband provider have to do a bit more work to get you connected - which might mean that you'll have to pay a fee upfront.
For example, because cable broadband provider Virgin Media (www.Virginmedia.com) has to install a completely new cable to connect you to its fibre optic network, it charges a standard connection fee £49.95.
Local loop unbundled (LLU) providers like TalkTalk broadband (www.Talktalk.co.uk) also have to do a little more work to get you online. Because of this, TalkTalk usually charges new customers a £30 connection fee.
However, you shouldn't let a broadband connection fee put you off signing up to your chosen provider. For example, even though TalkTalk usually charges a connection fee, it offers one of the cheapest broadband and home phone bundles on the market.
Look beyond free connection deals at the all-in-cost of your package. ISPs offering free connections may not ultimately be the cheapest when you include your monthly package cost and even line rental.
