Tesco broadband coverage and availability

Tesco (www.Tesco.net) is partnered with Cable & Wireless in a five year deal utilising the telecoms company’s LLU network to provide bundled home and broadband services. This partnership gives Tesco broadband coverage of 56% of the UK population.

Local loop unbundling is the process of installing a provider’s own broadband equipment in local telephone exchanges. This enables providers to supply lower cost broadband to customers as they no longer need to pay to wholesale lines from the existing network provider, usually BT. However in Tesco’s case, its “own” network it means that of Cable & Wireless, at least for the duration of the partnership.

Use our postcode checker to see if you live in an area covered by Tesco’s own network broadband.

Consumers outside of Tesco’s own network area

Although Tesco’s cheapest and fastest broadband packages are only available to the 56% of consumers living in its own network areas, 99% of the population can get a Tesco broadband connection with its “Broadband Only” package. Unfortunately for customers outside of the LLU network, because Tesco has to pay to use BT’s network, this comes at a higher price.

Speeds

Tesco offers 14Mb “up to” speeds to consumers within its own network. However, as is the case with other suppliers, actual speeds rarely match those advertised and you will experience a decline in speed due to a range of factors outside of your control including distance from the exchange and quality of the line. If you live outside of its own network area you will only be eligible for Tesco’s up to 8Mb broadband connection.

Future expansion plans

Tesco broadband will benefit from Cable & Wireless’ plans to increase broadband coverage and capability through both the expansion of its network and technological improvements. However at present there are no details about the extent to which it plans to expand the network.

As well as offering reasonably priced deals, customers can also collect Clubcard points for every £ spent on broadband. Plus, Tesco has one-off points offers available to new broadband customers and it allows you to pay for your packages with your reward points.
