Broadband tools

Here at BroadbandChoices.co.uk we try to provide you with a host of useful tools to help you understand how your broadband is performing, stop you exceeding your download limit and even increase your security.

Speed test (on site)

Our free Broadband Speed Test allows you to run a quick speed test to see how fast your broadband really is.

No connection runs at the full advertised speed, and most connections average around 3.4Mb. However, some run even slower than this. So if you want to find out exactly how fast your broadband is, use our free, on-site broadband speed test.

You can access the on-site speed test by following the Broadband Speed Test link, then simply enter your ISP and the package that you subscribe to - making sure that you check the box if you’re using a wireless connection - so that the correct size test data can be sent out. We simply see how long it takes to download the small file, to find out how fast your connection is.

You can then rate your broadband provider for customer service, value for money and reliability, access useful tips on speeding up your current connection or let off some steam in one of our forums.

Speed Tester (download)

If you want to fun regular speed tests, it might be worth installing our free, Broadband Speed Tester software.

Rather than having to go to the BroadbandChoices.co.uk website every time you want to run a speed test, this clever little tool allows you to install the tester on your own computer.

The downloadable version of our Speed Tester will automatically run a speed test at the allocated time - you can choose from hourly, daily, weekly or monthly tests, or only when you turn your PC on.

You can also choose if, and when, you would like to be alerted with the results from your latest test.

The downloadable version even keeps a log of your speed history, so you can go back and see how much your speed is reduced at peak times, or whether it’s faster at weekends.

To install our free Speed Tester simply follow the link and the on-screen instructions.

Broadband Download Monitor

If you’re worried about exceeding your set download limit, having the speed on your fair usage package throttled because of over use or just want to see how much you download each month, then why not install our free Broadband Download Monitor?

This tool tracks your downloads and even lets you set alarms to alert you once you’ve used, 25 per cent, 50 per cent and 90 per cent of your monthly allowance so that you never exceed your limit.

Alternatively you can choose to be alerted when you turn your PC on, or once a day, week or month.

Follow this link to install the Broadband Download Monitor.

Wireless Key Generator

Going wireless is great; it allows you the freedom to access the internet no matter where you are in the house, and to share your connection with other people - so no more fighting with the kids over whose turn it is to check their Facebook account.

However, you need to make sure that you have the best possible security set up to protect your wifi network from hackers, passers by or even neighbours trying to piggyback your internet.

To do this you need to regularly change your password, and choose one that will be hard to hack into. Our free Wireless Key Generator creates unique, hard-to-hack passwords for the older 64bit, 128bit or 258bit WEP type encryptions as well as the newer, more secure 64bit, 128bit, 258bit and 504bit WPA and WPA-2 encryption.

Simply refresh the page by clicking the Refresh button or pressing F5 on your keyboard, copy the key you need and paste it in as your new password.

Each time anyone refreshes the page a completely new, random set of codes will be created, helping you stay safe and secure online.
