3 has announced a new mobile wifi service that offers a portable modem - allowing users to get online with multiple devices, no matter where they are.

The service, which will be launched in time for Christmas, will allow customers to use a small wireless modem to connect to 3 Broadband's (www.Three.co.uk) 3G mobile broadband network.

Unlike current mobile broadband dongles that use USB connections, the mobile wifi service will allow users to connect any wireless-enabled device, including iPhones, the iPod touch, smart phones and portable gaming devices like the PSP and Nintendo DS as well as laptops and netbooks.

The wireless signal will be encrypted like your home network, so you will need a password to connect and users can even connect more than one device at a time.

Marc Allera, sales & marketing director at 3 UK, said: “There are millions of wifi devices out there, but they can only be used in fixed locations. Consumer demand for easy and affordable internet access on the go is growing fast and we’re responding to that by announcing the UK’s first wireless modem.

“Using Mobile wifi from 3, consumers can connect to the internet wherever they have a 3 signal, whether at home or on the move. They can download a track onto their iPod touch, or tweet their latest updates to their mates, or both. Either way it’s simple to set-up, without the need for wires.”

Pricing details will be announced later this year.

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “This is a great alternative to mobile broadband as it allows using to connect any wireless device - not just laptops and netbooks with USB ports.

“Anyone who has already singed a mobile broadband contract can get a mobile broadband router to share their signal and connect other devices,” he advised.
