Virgin Media is the first television provider to offer the BBC’s free download service in full screen and high quality.
The top three shows downloaded by Virgin Media’s 3.5 million customers since going live on 1 June are Eastenders, Doctor Who and Holby City.
Malcolm Wall, CEO of content at Virgin Media, said that the company was “delighted by the fantastic customer response and the continued success of our on demand offering”.
Rahul Chakkara, BBC controller TV platforms, added: “These early figures indicate a real appetite from viewers to access BBC iPlayer via their TVs and catch-up on their favourite programmes from the comfort of their living room. This initial success on Virgin Media, underlines the multi-platform appeal of BBC iPlayer proposition.”
The cable provider also revealed that almost half of its customers regularly use its on-demand services.
Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “Being able to access BBC programmes in high quality, and on-demand on their TVs is great for Virgin Media customers.
“However, those not lucky enough to have access to the BBC iPlayer on their TV need to keep an eye on their downloads to ensure that they don’t exceed their limit downloading too many episodes of The Apprentice.
“Install our free Broadband Download Monitor to keep an eye on your downloads,” he advised.
