Brits top for online shopping

(12-11-07) - Online shoppers in the UK will spend more than double the French or German online Christmas shopper combined, breaking the £500 barrier for the first time.

New research has predicted that with British broadband users already spending more time shopping online than banking, gaming or downloading music; online sales are set to quadruple over the next 10 years to a whopping £162 billion.

Christmas shoppers are expected to spend an average of £504 shopping online this year. The report estimated that forgoing the high street in favour of internet shopping saves the average household as much as £500 a year - almost three times the cost of the broadband connection they use to shop.

The most popular products to buy online are holidays, music and films, though it is services such as broadband, credit cards and energy that represent the biggest savings for online shoppers, who can shave as much as 21 per cent by choosing the internet over traditional retailers.

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “In the run up to Christmas everyone is busy trying to get their presents sorted. Buying online saves time and allows you to compare prices across the market in an instant.

“The broadband boom in recent years has facilitated the increase in online shopping with faster speeds and improved security.”

Anyone still worried about inputting personal finance details over the internet just need to make sure that they use their common sense, he said. “As well as having an up-to-date internet security suite, shoppers should only use known websites and look for the secure padlock icon at the bottom of the page.

“MasterCard and Visa users can also sign up for MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa, which offer an added level of security on your credit card payments.”
