Cable beating ADSL in speed reliability
(18-09-07) - Overall cable connections are outperforming ADSL according to the latest results from our new Speed Tester software.
Thirty-one per cent of cable customers receive at least 75 per cent of their advertised speed, compared to an abysmal seven per cent of ADSL customers. And while 37 per cent of ADSL customers received less than a quarter of their promised speed, only 16 per cent of cable customer “enjoyed” such poor speeds for August-September.
However, in the speed league table, Tesco (www.Tesco.net) held on to the top spot, with customers getting an average of 47.6 per cent, AOL (www.AOL.co.uk) remained in second place with 45.3 per cent, while increased numbers from our new software allowed newcomer to the top ten Freedom2surf (www.Freedom2surf.net) to enter in at number three, pushing Virgin Media (www.VirginMedia.com) down to fourth place.
However, Chris Eagle, BroadbandChoices.co.uk commercial manager, warned that AOL may soon fall from the top three as the change to all 8Mb packages takes effect. “As we’ve said before, it is easier for providers like AOL and Tesco to maintain higher percentages of delivered speed because many more of their customers are on slower packages.
But AOL has now reshuffled its packages so that all customers will be on up to 8Mb. They are focusing on unbundling exchanges in order to increase speeds but until this is complete, we may see their ‘performance’ fall.”
