How Does Broadband Work?
Broadband internet works in two main ways, through either a cable or an ADSL line, with the same result each time – the user gets a 24-hour internet service for a set monthly cost. If you choose a service provider through BroadbandChoices, you’ll be able to choose between every type of broadband network available in your area. Internet service providers (ISPs) usually work through either ADSL or cable connections. This only affects the installation of your broadband connection – once installed, there is no practical difference between the two.
ADSL ISPs
ADSL ISPs (AOL, Be, BT Broadband etc) use the BT copper wire network that your phone line uses, to connect you to the internet. To get connected, you need to buy a high-speed modem (which most ISPs will provide for free), but you won’t have to have an engineer visit your home. This could entail a connection fee, but most companies will waive this fee and only charge you if you leave their service within a year.
Cable ISPs
Most cable connections are run by Virgin Media, formerly ntl:Telewest. If you live in Hull you might be able to get a Kingston connection. You will need to live in an area served by the company, but you don’t need to have a BT phone line. To get connected, Virgin Media must arrange for someone to visit and install your cable line. You might be charged a set-up fee for this.
