You don’t have to sign a long contract to get mobile broadband. There are now a host of pay-as-you-go and rolling one month mobile broadband packages available - so if you just want a taster, or are loath to commit for 12, 18 or 24 months, then these are the plans for you.
But if you really are an occasional user, and just want the cheapest pay-as-you-go option, then T-Mobile’s Web’n’walk Plus Daily is definitely the best buy.
One month options
Vodafone, 3 (www.Three.co.uk) and O2 (www.O2.co.uk) all offer one month contracts, though O2’s mobile broadband is currently only available to existing O2 mobile phone and home broadband customers.
Vodafone’s Mobile Broadband 3GB 30 Days package costs £20 a month and comes with a 3GB download allowance, charging £15 per additional GB if you exceed your limit. O2’s One Month Mobile Broadband tariff costs £15 a month and comes with a 3GB download allowance just like Vodafone. Or, you can get O2's 10GB download limit for £35 a month.
Finally, 3 offers “add-ons” of all three of its contract packages; Add Broadband Lite, Add Broadband Plus and Add Broadband Max, giving users 1GB, 3GB and 7GB download allowances respectively. Each “add-on” costs the same for one month as a contracted customer would pay, so Add Broadband Lite is £10 a month, Add Broadband Plus is £15 and Add Broadband Max is £25 a month. However, where contracted customers pay 10p per additional MB over their allowance, those on one month contracts are charged a massive £1 per additional MB.
So 3 definitely offers the cheapest option and has more choice, though you need to be very careful about not exceed your limit or you’ll end up being charged a huge amount.
