Background - As a well-known quality supermarket, Waitrose (www.Waitrose.com) is using its trusted name to help expand its broadband reach. They offer a live line speed check before signing up and promise to offer the best speed possible, up to 8Mb, though downloads are capped at 5GB.
Awards - Waitrose Broadband has been a Which? Best Buy since August 2005.
It was also a runner up in the “Best Dial-Up” category at the 2007 ISPAs and runner up in the “Best Heavy Consumer Broadband” category in 2006.
Suitability - Waitrose Broadband is a good choice for people who are new to broadband use, who don’t use the internet for heavy downloads or who are concerned about their technical capabilities setting up their connection and dealing with any problems that might arise.
Our verdict - It isn’t very competitively priced at £18.99 a month - and you’ll have to pay an additional cost to BT for line rental too - but for people who are new to broadband, it is a good starting point.
The Which? Best Buy award is reassuring and Waitrose scores well for reliability and support. However, customers are tied into a 12 month contract, so even if they become more confident with their hardware, they’ll have to wait until they can switch to a cheaper provider.
