Background - Pipex (www.Pipex.com) was one of first ISPs to launch in the UK and in the past few years has acquired both Bulldog and Toucan. They offer phone and broadband packages as well as the option to bundle the two.
Awards - At the 2006 Internet Service Provider Awards (ISPAs), Pipex were finalists in the “Best Consumer ISP”, “Best Business ISP” and “Best Business Broadband” categories. They also received a Commendation for Innovation for their customer loyalty programme.
In 2003 they won the “Best Consumer Broadband Provider” award at the ISPAs.
Suitability - Pipex are suitable for standard users who have no special needs such as excessive download limits or very high-level technical support. They offer a reliable, established service. It’s also good for people wanting to bundle their broadband with a phone line to save on calls.
Also, all of their call centres are based in the UK which might be another plus point for some people.
Our verdict - Pipex are a good option for people who are able fairly confident about set-up and use of broadband. They do provide reasonable support but this isn’t really a service for people with special needs but remember that they have been commended for their service in the past.
