Providers ‘struggle’ to deal with line tags
(08-10-07) - Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) numbers are growing, but tags on lines continue to be a problem according to the latest report from the Office of the Telecommunications Adjudicator (OTA).
There are now 3.195 million LLU lines in the UK, but the technology still faces problems and the OTA urged providers to “raise their game” in order to bring tagging issues under control.
Tags occur when an ISP hasn’t been fully removed from a customer’s line - either because the contract wasn’t cancelled properly, or because the ISP wasn’t properly removed by BT Wholesale.
Having a tag on the line means that a new provider can’t be installed until it has been cleared.
The report also said that “right first time” LLU lines was still below target, with many connections not working when first installed.
Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “Providers are keen to move customers onto LLU networks as it increases profits. However, they have to ensure that tags are not left on lines, that more LLU installations are right first time and that the Simultaneous Provide Process is universally adopted to make it easier for customers on fully unbundled lines to leave if they’re unhappy with their service.
“At present there are many different migration processes for moving from one type of technology and provider to another, and this is confusing for customers. With LLU growing at such a rapid pace, the OTA and Ofcom need to make migration easier.”
