Tiscali passes 2m mark but loses TV customers
(14-11-07) - Italian broadband giant Tiscali announced yesterday that its UK arm has now exceeded two million broadband customers, with 55 per cent connected to one of its 800 unbundled exchanges.
The triple play provider, which also offers an internet TV service, home phone and line rental, added 638,000 new broadband customers since the start of the year, with its acquisition of Pipex (www.Pipex.co.uk) helping to boost figures.
Tiscali (www.Tiscali.co.uk) also slowly launched its Tiscali TV network - formerly HomeChoice - over the year but despite extending its internet TV (IPTV) reach to more than five million UK homes, the company actually lost television customers.
At the end of October 2007 Tiscali TV had a disappointing 36,000 customers despite a deal with Sky (www.Sky.com) to air the basic channels that Virgin Media (www.VirginMedia.com) famously lost this year.
When it merged with Tiscali in August 2006, the much smaller HomeChoice brand had 45,000 customers.
Better news for the group was the extended reach of its more profitable local loop unbundled (LLU) network, allowing it to offer a broadband, television, home phone and line rental bundle for only £19.99.
Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “Tiscali’s £19.99 bundle is very good value for money. However, it’s not yet available across the whole of the UK, but as Tiscali continues to unbundled exchanges allowing it to offer this deal to more customers, the Tiscali TV service will definitely pick up.
“The first region to have its analogue signal turned off switched to digital TV last month and as the Government’s switchover programme gathers pace, this deal will look increasingly attractive,” he added.
