Virgin Media regains the top spot
(10-03-08) - Cable provider Virgin Media has taken back the top spot on the BroadbandChoices.co.uk monthly speed test league table, after falling to second place in January.
Last month’s results show that with an average offering of 11Mb, Virgin Media (www.VirginMedia.com) was offering the second fastest average speeds, but was delivering way ahead of its nearest rival with customers enjoying an average of 55.1 per cent of their promised speed.
Tesco (www.Tesco.net) - which is usually in the top three - and Freedom2Surf (www.Freedom2Surf.net) didn’t register enough speed tests and were not included in this month’s results.
Super fast broadband speeds - like the 24Mb package offered by Be Broadband, the 16Mb package offered by Sky Broadband and Virgin Media’s 20Mb - are far harder to deliver on, said Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, which invariably brings down a company’s average reliability score.
“However, as well as trialling speeds of up to 50Mb, Virgin Media has started a process of upgrading all of its 4Mb customers to 10Mb connections for free, and this will definitely improve speeds for many people on the company’s fast, reliable cable network,” he added.
Cable beat ADSL connections once again, with customers receiving an average of 55.1 per cent of their advertised speeds compared to just 37 per cent for ADSL customers.
