BroadbandChoices.co.uk Awards

Writes Garnet Roach garnet@consumerchoices.co.uk

The recent BroadbandChoices.co.uk awards, in conjunction with internet analysts Point Topic, named the UK’s favourite broadband providers listing ISPs for a number of categories including value for money, quality of service and after sales support.

More than 4,200 households were asked to rate their broadband provider for its performance in the following six categories:

  • Quality & stability of your home internet service
  • Download time of files & web pages
  • The clarity of pricing & billing
  • After sales support
  • Good value for money
  • Speed of service activation

The overall winner

Sky Broadband (www.Sky.com) was voted the best overall provider in the July 2008 survey, which is run every six months - coming top in all six categories. TalkTalk (www.TalkTalk.co.uk) and cable provider Virgin Broadband (www.VirginMedia.com) took second and third place respectively. Orange (www.Orange.co.uk) and AOL (www.AOL.co.uk) came bottom of the pack with sixth and seventh place respectively.

All Categories Overall
Provider Fairly/Very Satisfied
Sky Broadband 1st
TalkTalk 2nd
Virgin Media 3rd
Tiscali UK 4th
BT Broadband 5th
Orange 6th
AOL Broadband 7th

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “Sky is the UK’s fastest growing broadband provider. They have recently increased their advertising presence and set their prices and packages at a level that has attracted a large number of new customers to its service. It seems their approach is working, but it also seems that the general service Sky is offering is good enough to keep their existing customers happy.”

The satisfaction gap is increasing

But despite Sky’s good performance, BroadbandChoices.co.uk noted that the gap between good and bad service is increasing. “ISPs should be competing fiercely not only to acquire customers but also to keep them happy and that means a better service across the board,” said a concerned Phillips. “Over the past six months our survey shows that the gap between the top ISP and bottom ISP in each category is getting bigger - so whilst some companies are clearly improving their satisfaction ratings, others are falling further behind.

The low scores for after sales support, when compared to other categories, shows for the second time running that “customers feel neglected after they have signed on the dotted line”.

After Sales Support
Provider Fairly/Very Satisfied
Sky Broadband 65%
TalkTalk 53%
BT Broadband 50%
Virgin Media 50%
AOL Broadband 46%
Tiscali UK 44%
Orange 42%

However, TalkTalk received a special mention for having moved up in five out of six categories since the February 2008 survey, moving up four places in the “after sales support” category in just six months.

Value for money

Surprisingly, given the ongoing financial crisis, broadband users still feel that they’re getting good value for money; reinforcing the idea that broadband is no longer a luxury but a household essential that many users feel they could not live without.

Sky, which came first in this category, offers a wide range of broadband, digital TV and home phone bundles, allowing customers to save money by combining products, while second-place provider TalkTalk has some of the cheapest packages on the market with its popular “free broadband” offers.

BT (www.BT.com) which came last in the group has higher headline rates than many of its competitors, and although it offers a wide range of services, doesn’t offer any discounts to customers bundling products.

Good Value for money
Provider Fairly/Very Satisfied
Sky Broadband 80%
TalkTalk 75%
Tiscali UK 60%
Virgin Media 54%
Orange 50%
AOL Broadband 50%
BT Broadband 42%

“We had expected a significant decrease in the number of users who felt they were receiving value for money since the last survey, as the credit crunch bites harder in to household incomes,” said Phillips. “The difference between February and July 2008 is less than 1 per cent.

“However, households can still save money,” he added. “ISPs announce new deals all the time and any household that hasn’t looked at what else is on offer for a year or more may find that they can make significant savings on their annual cost of broadband if they switch to another provider. Our research has shown that users can save an average of £150 per year if they switch to a new package or provider through our website.”

A special mention for O2

Although its sample size wasn’t big enough to be included in the results, O2 (www.O2.co.uk) received a special mention from BroadbandChoices.co.uk for the outstanding feedback from its customers.

O2 scored a massive 94 per cent for fairly/very satisfied in “overall quality and reliability” - compared to 86 per cent for category winner Sky and an impressive 79 per cent for “after sales support” - 12 points more than its nearest rival and category winner Sky and a whopping 37 per cent more than Orange which came last in the group.

Switch if you’re not happy

Good value broadband isn’t just about low headline rates. You need to think about your needs as a user and ensure that your get a service suited to your requirements.

If you’re having problems with your provider, or simply want to save some money on your bills, then why not compare broadband providers and switch broadband with BroadbandChoices.co.uk. You could save yourself money and get yourself a better standard of service.

  1. ah tiscali, i'm with Pipex who sold my broadband to tiscali without my consent. My sister was the same, we live in the same estate. She moved to Sky and on doing the online test she suddenly was downloading 4 to 5 times quicker than me and may I say the download speed was the same as me when she was on tiscali, mmmmmmm, same phone line, same router, same distance from exchange, same up to 8meg package, far superior all round.............I'm in the process of moving from poor tiscali/pipex speed.

  2. I am sorry but I fail to see how Sky & Talk Talk are the 1st & 2nd in your league table. I have to sing the praises of Tiscali who I have had a package deal with for 4 years +. Broadband speeds of 4 to 5 never less, no disconections, all national & local telephone calls free 24/7, no landline rental, this is included in the package,no download problems - all this for £19.99 a month! I am well satisfied with this deal.

  3. Just a comment about your survey. I cannot speak about sky broadband but I can speak of talk talk. I had talk talk for about six months but packed it in as the speed and service were rubish. You only have to browse the net for comments about talk talk and you will agree they are the worst company for broadband so how on earth you get them at number 2 in your survey is a complete mystery to me. I am now with DST and although the speeds are not good they are I would put them way above talk talk. As a lot of people are saying talk talk is all they do.

  4. Could not agree more with John Ried and Anthony Aspinall. I was with VirginMedia but after paying nearly £40 for a 20Mb service and only getting 2Mb if I was lucky, I gave up and left for Be*. I have had few problems with them and when I had a minor problem (it was traced to a defective filter in one of my phone sockets) it was sorted out straight away. I even got to speak to people that I could understand and talk to sensibly. I have not looked back since.

  5. I could not agree more with the comments made by (John Reith, Bristol uk,). We have been with NTL or Virgim Media now for two years, and, eight months ago we upgraded to the 20mb package, as we were finding we were having to wait 5 mins for a simple download. For the first week we noticed a difference and speeds were great so fast , but , after that a snail could walk from London to Brighton quicker than it takes to open some of the pages on the web. If it wern't for the fact that it would cost so much to take out cable and have BT put into our residence, I would have no hesitation in doing this. WHY ARE WE PAYING FOR A 20MB SERVICE WE WERE PROMISED AND NOT GETTING.

I RUN A PUB AND IF THE BOSSES FROM VIRGIN CAME INTO MY PLACE AND ASKED AND PAYED FOR A PINT OF BEER AND I SERVED THEM WITH A HALF THEY WOULD BE THE FIRST TO COMPLAIN, AND I WOULD BE DONE FOR THEFT. So why is nobody prepared to stick up for us bottom of the ladder people.

  6. I am with Sky Broadband and I find their services excellent. They still have not yet reached the agreed speed yet but are very close. Considering where I live I am happy with their efforts so far.

  7. I've been with talktalk for just over 2 years and have had only 1 problem since they started. Took them 3 datys to get engineer out and he diagnosed 'pole' problem. BT replaced local telephone pole and no further problems. Speed not as high as it might be, but suitable, most of the time, for my needs. Phone package - 24/7 free calls, broadband and line rental for £21 p.m. is cheapest around and perfect for me (my wife phones her mates/family during the day and at night). Have not had any serious problems with broadband 'dropping out' since it started. Cant see how Sky topped 'Value for Money' as they are much dearer (when you have to take Sky TV) .

  8. Im sorry but I fail to see the validity of your survey. The survey conducted was supposidly based on quality not quantity of customers an ISP has on thier books. Are these large ISP's giving you a back hander to keep them at the higher levels in these surveys? All of the ISP's in your results list have totally abismal services and even worse customer support with the only exeption of SKY which does seem to be a good ISP from people I speak too who use them.
I myself use Be* Unlimited which is now owned by O2 Broadband but operates under thier own title and supplies slightly faster services to those lucky few of us in the UK whos telephone lines are able to cope with increased ADSL2+ speeds. They are the best ISP i've ever used in the UK to date!

  9. i should think SKY should be top of your survey, the amount of money they rake in. you should do a survey of which company reward there customers for being long standing customers.

  10. How on Earth is talk talk got into the list I have no idea. I have had nothing but problems with Talk talk since the day they took over as my telecoms provider. With constant disconnections at all different times of day. I can't even use the speed dial on my phone as it comes up with number has not be recognised so I have to dial it manually. I am still confused why they can't provide the same speed as my previous ISP. Dropped from 5mbps to 3mps. All the equipment my end hasn't changed and the router is on the master socket. They take an age to reply to emails concerning complaints, 7 days to get a reply if I'm lucky and I thought email was instant! 2-3 day delay for a reply would be more respectable. The tech support department don't seem to know anything either.

Now moving house it is going to take 6 weeks to get my internet back on. 2 weeks to disconnect the current line, 2 weeks to connect the new line and an another 2 weeks to get the internet set up.
    Why so long?
