T-Mobile mobile broadband

Although it doesn’t offer a fixed line broadband service, T-Mobile’s mobile broadband (www.t-mobile.co.uk/broadband) packages allow you to connect your laptop to the internet no matter where you are. As long as you can pick up the 3G signal, you’ll be able to connect at speeds of up to 2.8Mb - due to be boosted to a top speed of 7.2Mb in coming months.

T-Mobile mobile broadband

T-Mobile’s pay-monthly packages are priced differently for customers on either 12 or 24 month contracts. The cheaper Web’n’Walk Plus 12 and 24 month packages come with unlimited downloads but a fair usage policy of 3GB is applied. This means that you won’t immediately be charged for excess usage if you go over 3GB, but if you regularly exceed the limit, you’ll be asked to upgrade to a more appropriate package. Web’n’Walk Plus costs £20 a month on a 12 month contract or £29 on a 24 month contract.

Web’n’Walk Plus customers can use their connection to surf the internet, download files, check emails and stream video and audio files, but can’t use VoIP services like Skype.

The more expensive Web’n’Walk Max 12 and 24 month packages also have unlimited downloads, but with fair usage policies of 10GB, and customers can use their connections for making internet phone calls using programs like Skype. Web’n’Walk Max costs £35 a month on a 12 month contract or £44 on a 24 month contract.

T-Mobile was the first mobile broadband provider to offer pay-as-you-go connections, and once you’ve bought your modem, Web’n’Walk Plus Daily will cost you only £4 a day, with an overall monthly fair usage limit of 3GB.

What is T-Mobile’s coverage like?

At the moment, the fastest possible speed on T-Mobile’s 3G network is 2.8Mb, but this should be increased to 7.2Mb in the coming year.

The UK’s entire 3G network currently covers around 90 per cent of the UK. T-Mobile’s network is joined to Three’s and the two providers are currently developing an extended turbo-charged network. However, you should still check the network coverage in your area before you sign up, which you can do online at T-Mobile's website or in a T-Mobile store.

T-Mobile hardware

When you sign up for one of T-Mobile’s pay-monthly mobile broadband plans you have a choice of either a Web'n'walk USB Stick or a Web'n'walk USB modem. Both are free, compatible with Macs and PCs and come with easy “plug and play” installation, but the USB Stick is the newer of the two devices - T-Mobile calls it “future proof” - and it allows faster, next generation HSDPA/HSUPA downloads and uploads.

Is it right for me?

Although mobile broadband offers amazing freedom and is great for anyone who doesn’t want to pay around £11 a month for line rental or have a fixed-line broadband service, the cost of downloading is still too high for mobile broadband to really replace home broadband services.

However, for anyone who wants broadband on-the-go and who doesn’t plan on downloading the entire second series of Lost, T-Mobile’s mobile broadband is reliable and competitively priced, with discounts for signing a longer contract.
