AOL’s reshuffle
(07-09-07) - AOL (www.AOL.co.uk) has replaced its old broadband packages with two simplified offers and revealed it will be focusing on local loop unbundling (LLU).
Gone are its previous Silver and Platinum packages, having been replaced with Wireless and Wireless Plus, both offering up to 8Mb and free wireless routers for all.
The company also said that it is currently working to partially unbundle between 60 and 70 per cent of the UK’s telephone exchanges, allowing it to cut the cost of its broadband by offering LLU. An insider also told BroadbandChoices that AOL would also be offering LLU prices to customers living in areas scheduled to be unbundled before the LLU technology has actually been put in place. It will also be investing in ADSL2 technology in order to deliver even faster broadband across the UK.
Customers signing up to the new Wireless Plus package can also get a free Dell laptop, as part of a promotion with Carphone Warehouse. However, they will have to tie themselves into a two year contract - currently the longest in the market.
The Wireless Plus package costs from £19.99 a month with speeds of up to 8Mb and a usage allowance of 40GB. Customers get a free wireless router and AOL Talk Pay-As-You-Go is also included.
Those signing up to the cheaper Wireless package pay £14.99 a month on the shorter, 18 month contract, still get the same 8Mb connection but have a lower download limit at 10GB.
Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “We welcome the fact that AOL has ditched the use of the term ‘unlimited’, which is confusing for customers who are actually bound by fair usage policies.
“Customers now on set download allowances can use our free Broadband Download Monitor to keep an eye on their downloading and even set alarms to alert them before they reach their limit,” he advised.
