The issuing of a MAC code has nothing to do with cancelling your account - you can request one, keep it for 30 days and not use it if you change your mind. If you didn’t use it you would simply continue with your current provider, so your ISP shouldn’t have told you this.
The point of MAC codes are to provide a seamless migration from one ISP to another, so that there is no break in your connection when you switch to a new broadband provider. Cancelling your contract in the way your ISP is suggesting would make MAC codes completely pointless.
You should call your current provider back, asking to speak to the manager and explain again that you would like to be issued with a MAC code so that you can switch without downtime. Make sure you make your knowledge of MAC codes clear to them and mention that you have double checked with us and Ofcom (who set the MAC rules).
