Sharing Broadband in a Student House - Ask Our Expert

If you’re having technical, service or supply problems, or just have a question you want answering, why not write to OurExpert@BroadbandChoices.co.uk

Michael Phillips is product director at BroadbandChoices.co.uk and can help with anything from contractual problems, to giving technical advice or telling you how to speed up those slow movie downloads.

Q - Dear Michael,

Next month my daughter will be moving into a house with six other students. They will each have a laptop computer in their rooms and will need fairly quick access to the internet, possibly all at the same time.

Could you please advise as to what system, set up and equipment they are going to need to enable them to all to enjoy hassle free internet use?

Rob Humphries, via email

Our expert says...

The easiest way for your daughter and her flatmates to all connect to the internet at the same time is via a wireless router. Many ISPs will provide one for free when you sign up, and they are very easy to install. Providers who offer free wireless routers include AOL, Eclipse and Madasafish . But you can search for others on our homepage.

An up to 8Mb service should be fine, as long as they’re browsing and using email rather than all downloading movies, music and other large files at the same time.

They will also need to make sure that they have set up security on the router (a password in the form of a WEP or WPA key) so that other people won’t be able to log on and use their connection as this will slow it down.
