19 out of 20 prefer broadband

Broadband dominates with almost 95% of internet connections

The UK's love affair with broadband continues to rise on the back of easy availability and attractive pricing. By contrast, old dial-up technology is being shunned.

Almost 19 out of 20 internet connections in the UK are via broadband according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS) (www.statistics.gov.uk). The figures show that broadband connections in the UK accounted for 94.1% of overall internet connections between June-September 2008.

Dial-up connections fell by 18.6% in the same June-Septebmer period. So, the number of connections via dial-up is down almost 50% year-on-year.

"For anyone who hasn’t upgraded to broadband, the convenience and cost savings are undeniable"

Higher speed broadband is also gaining fans. The September figures show 57.7% of all broadband connections had a speed greater than 2Mbps, up almost 2% from June. The figures were based on ISPs’ advertised speeds, but actual broadband speeds can be slower for users depending on things such as distance from the local exchange and line quality.

The data, collected from a base of internet service providers (ISPs) also showed that the decline in dial-up connections led to a fall in the index of all connections between June and September 2008.

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “For anyone who hasn’t upgraded to broadband, the convenience and cost savings are undeniable.

“It will cost just £4.50 a month to get a speedy broadband connection, which will give you super-fast email, web-browsing and allow you to watch internet TV and download music,” he added.
