O2 has refreshed its mobile broadband packages following research showing that one in ten mobile broadband customers feels that they have been mis-sold on their contract.
The main source of irritation was that consumers felt they had been deceived on cost, with nearly a third complaining that the ongoing cost of their contract was higher than expected, said O2 Broadband (www.O2.co.uk), which carried out the survey.

One-fifth were frustrated that they couldn’t use their mobile broadband wherever they wanted, despite being told by their provider that they would have coverage, while a further 13 per cent were unhappy that there wasn’t a returns guarantee if the service wasn’t right for them.
Half of the consumers questioned said they would also like inclusive wireless broadband minutes too.
Following this research O2 has announced that it has reduced the cost of its 3GB mobile broadband package from £20 a month to £15, as well as adding a new heavy user package with a 10GB monthly download limit for £30 a month on a 24 month contract.
Customers already receive unlimited wifi access to The Cloud’s 6,100 wireless hotspots, and now O2 will also offer a 50 day “happiness guarantee” allowing customers who purchased directly from O2, to return their USB modem stick to O2 within 50 days of purchase with no termination fees and any costs for purchasing the device being refunded.
Peter Rampling, O2 marketing director, said: “Across the industry there are too many customers whose mobile broadband expectations have been set too high and have then been disappointed, which is a terrible shame given there are loads of people who are having a great time with mobile broadband.
“We want to continue to try to set the right expectation so all our mobile broadband customers know what sort of service they are going to get. And rather than just say it, we are underwriting this commitment with our unique 50 day happiness guarantee.”
O2’s mobile broadband packages come with the options of a rolling one month contract, which is £15 a month for a 3GB allowance or £35 a month for a 10GB allowance plus £99.99 for the USB modem stick; an 18 month contract which comes with a free dongle and costs £15 a month for a 3GB allowance or £35 a month for a 10GB allowance; or a 24 month contract which comes with a free dongle and costs £15 a month for a 3GB allowance or £30 a month for a 10GB allowance.
Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “Although O2’s mobile broadband got off to a slow start with availability only for existing O2 customers and a higher than average monthly price, these new offers will bring a breath of fresh air to the industry. The new 50 day ‘happiness guarantee’ will no doubt be a big hit and force competitors to offer similar guarantees.”
