Eclipse Broadband (www.Eclipse.net.uk) has announced two fibre optic broadband packages to be launched in April, with speeds of up to 40Mb.
The new superfast broadband packages, Eclipse Fibre and Eclipse Fibre Pro, will offer download speeds of up to 40Mb broadband, and up to 10Mb uploads, using fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) technology.
FTTC delivers fibre optic cables as far as the telephone street cabinet, with copper wires taking the signal the rest of the way to your home. This allows providers to offer far faster speeds than current ADSL lines, though fibre-to-the-home (FTTH), where fibre optic cables are run direct to your home offers speeds of up to 100Mb.
The two packages seem initially to be marketed towards business broadband users, and Eclipse hasn’t yet announced any consumer tariffs.
Clodagh Murphy, director of Eclipse Internet, said: "This marks the beginning of the next generation of services from Eclipse. Our superfast fibre broadband will enable businesses to benefit from increased connection speeds and services including VPN, video conferencing and VoIP."
Eclipse Fibre will cost £39.95 a month for a 40Mb service with 2Mb upload speeds and a 50GB download allowance, while Eclipse Fibre Pro will cost £49.95 with 40Mb downloads, up to 10Mb uploads and a 60GB monthly data allowance.
Both packages will be subject to a £75 installation fee, and Eclipse is guaranteeing speeds of at least 12Mb.
Michael Phillips, Broadbandchoices.co.uk product director, welcomed the announcement of Eclipse’s new packages: “Every new entrant to the fibre broadband market helps increase competition and will eventually make superfast connections more affordable for all.”
