BT Broadband 20Mb upgrade

In summer 2009 BT announced that all new and existing customers could access download speeds of up to 20Mb - as long as they were connected to an upgraded exchange.

New customers automatically receive the new, faster speeds when they sign up, while existing customers must recontract to be upgraded - though the speed boost is still free.

BT’s broadband packages come with download speeds of up to 20Mb, though each has a different download limit - two packages have set monthly allowances, while Option 3 has “unlimited broadband” allowances with a fair usage policy.

BT has developed a broadband checker tool so you can check BT Broadband speeds in your area before you buy. Simply visit www.BT.com and enter your postcode or phone number to show BT broadband connection speed test results near you.

BT customers not connected to an upgraded exchange can still get speeds of up to 8Mb.

All BT broadband packages are also BT Vision ready so you can add BT’s digital TV service for no extra monthly charge with the option to add further pay-per-view and subscription programming. BT Vision also offers month-by-month subscriptions.

BT Broadband benefits

As well as its standard broadband service and free BT Home Hub wireless router, BT also offers an extensive range of added extras, including mobile broadband, free wireless broadband minutes, free internet security, online backup and storage and access to the BT Fon network of wireless hotspots.

Existing BT customers can upgrade to speeds of up to 20Mb at no extra cost by signing a new contract with the ISP, providing their local exchange has been upgradde to offer the new speeds.

“However, BT is not a good choice for anyone looking to do a lot of peer-to-peer downloading as it does block certain ports which could restrict your access.”
