What is a speed test?

A speed test is an online tool that measures your download and upload speeds, so that you know what kind of actual speeds you're getting from your provider.

How do speed tests work?

Speed testers work by sending a small file to your computer and measuring how long it takes to download. By doing this, the speed tester can work out what your actual broadband speed is.

You will be sent a different file size depending on what package you're signed up to - for example, you will receive a smaller file if you're on an up to 2Mb package than if you're signed up to Virgin Media's (www.Virginmedia.com) 50Mb broadband - the UK’s fastest package.

What are the limitations of speed testers?

Not all speed testers are capable of handling the latest generation of superfast broadband packages, so if you're signed up to a 24Mb broadband package or higher, you might not get the right result.

However, the Broadbandchoices.co.uk broadband speed test can handle speeds of up to 200Mb - far faster than any residential broadband packages currently available in the UK - and has been approved by Virgin Media.

What could affect my speed test results?

Before running a speed test, make sure that you're not downloading any files and that any programs like the BBC iPlayer, Channel 4’s 4oD or Skype are completely shut down, as this can make your broadband appear slower than it actually is.

What could affect my download speeds?

A number of different factors affect your broadband download speed, ranging from the package and supplier that you're signed up to or the time of day that you go online. However, the most common problem is you distance from the local exchange. ADSL broadband speeds degrade the further you get from the telephone exchange and poor quality copper wiring can also slow you down.

There are things you can do to boost your download speed though, from installing an iPlate, to upgrading your wireless router or switching broadband provider to a faster package.
