How do I switch from Virgin Media to Sky?

How do I switch from Virgin Media to Sky?

I'm a Virgin Media broadband customer at the moment but want to move to Sky. How do I switch?

Our Broadband Expert says...

Virgin Media (www.Virginmedia.com) and Sky broadband (www.Sky.com) are both great choices if you're looking for an all-in-one broadband, home phone and digital TV bundle.

Each provider has different strengths and weaknesses; Virgin Media offers the fastest broadband in the country, while Sky customers enjoy the UK’s only truly unlimited broadband package and more than 50 high-definition TV channels.

Switching from cable

Switching broadband provider is a great way to save money, as well as getting yourself a better service. Broadbandchoices.co.uk research has shown that bundling your broadband with home phone and digital TV can save you over £300 a year.

Moving away from Virgin Media’s cable network requires a little work

But unlike the majority of broadband connections that can be seamlessly switched from one provider to the next without a break in your connection, moving away from Virgin Media’s cable network requires a little more work.

Virgin Media’s cable network is completely separate from the copper wire telephone lines used by most providers - including Sky.

This means that in order to get connected, you’ll need to have a new landline installed. Sky offers this service for just £39 as standard, though you can often take advantage of special offers and deals to cut the cost even further.

For minimum disruption, you should try to arrange for your Virgin Media service to be disconnected on the same day that your Sky line and satellite dish are installed.

Setting up your Sky connection

Sign up to your new Sky package online and you’ll be able to take advantage of the very best deals on offer.

Choose the services you want, such as the Unlimited package or the free broadband Everyday Lite service, how many TV “viewing packs” you want and whether or not you want to add Sky Talk - which can actually cut the cost of your overall monthly bills.

Then simply arrange for your Sky landline to be installed, which will carry your broadband and home phone service, and for a dish to be fixed to the outside of your home.

And if you don’t want to take Sky TV, you can still sign-up to Sky’s Unlimited package - giving you speeds of up to 20Mb broadband and truly unlimited downloads, with no fair usage policy or traffic management.

I am considering moving from Virgin Media cable broadband to another supplier. I do not have a landline apart from the VM line in the broadband package so I wonder if all other suppliers install a landline? Will I be able to retain my current landline phonenumber if I close everything with VM?

Thanks
