(08-12-06) - The final decision on the new regulations that could force all internet providers to issue migration access codes (MAC) is expected before Christmas.
Ofcom, the telecommunications regulator is likely to announce their recommendations in the coming weeks in a move to help customers wishing to change supplier.
Having a MAC code allows customers to easily move from one provider to the next, without a break in their service.
According to Ofcom it is vital that consumers have the ability to “switch or ‘migrate’ between products and providers – so that customers can consider available options and change broadband service or provider when they want to”. But at present, there is no obligation for ISPs to provide these codes, and in some cases, they are withheld until the account has been settled.
The review of the current practice is a response to the many complaints made by unhappy customers who have been left without internet or relegated to dial-up by unhelpful providers.
Chris Eagle, BroadbandChoices Commercial Manager welcomed the possible action. He said: 'Ofcom has been slow in taking a lead on the issue of switching broadband ISP. Many ISP drag their heels and use the MAC code a means of retaining customers, rather than actually providing a good service. Ofcom needs to put a mandatory framework in place with naming and shaming of non-compliant ISPs, with a framework for considerable fines'
