Answer: Speeds of up to 24Mb are available from TalkTalk Broadband (www.Talktalk.co.uk), BE Broadband (www.Bethere.co.uk) and Eclipse Internet (www.Eclipse.net.uk). Click the package name for specs and speeds, and press GO to visit the provider's website directly.

Actual download speeds

While providers might advertise high top speeds, in practise, a number of factors will reduce the actual speed you receive. These include:

• Your distance from the exchange: ADSL broadband speeds fall the further you live from the telephone exchange. If this is an issue, you should consider switching to cable broadband; fibre optic broadband speeds remain the same, no matter how far you are from the exchange.
• Network congestion: The number of people using your network at the same time will also affect speeds available in your neighbourhood. This is why speeds often fall in the late afternoon after school and office hours.
• Traffic management: Your ISP’s own traffic management policy might slow you down at peak times when it tries to even out speeds for all of its customers.
