Whether you're a savvy silver surfer or a gadget gizmo grandma, you’ll need a reliable broadband package with good customer service.
The internet offers a huge range of benefits for older people. You can look up old friends, keep in touch with family, and even save money on your bills by looking for the best deals online.
But if you're not the most technologically-minded person, there will be a few things that you really need to think about before choosing a new broadband package.
Broadband isn’t all about speed. Knowing that you can rely on your internet connection whenever you need it is just as important.
A number of providers have been recommended by consumer watchdog Which? for their reliable service.
These include Zen Internet (www.Zen.co.uk), which has been among the top performers since 2005. It scored 89% satisfaction in the last Which? survey - with five stars for customer service, reliability and speed.
O2 broadband (www.O2.co.uk), which has topped the Broadbanchoices.co.uk customer satisfaction awards for two years running, scored 80% satisfaction from Which?, followed by partner BE broadband (www.Bethere.co.uk) and Utility Warehouse in fourth place with 74%.
Many people automatically opt for BT broadband (www.BT.com). As the UK’s incumbent operator, it is a known, trusted brand that many people feel safe with.
But choosing a cheaper broadband package doesn’t mean you have to compromise on service. For example, O2 is known for its reliable connections and very high standards of technical support and customer service.
It offers free technical support to all customers and keeps all of its call centres in the UK - so you know you'll always understand and be understood.
There are a number of different ways that you can pay for your broadband service, though direct debit is the most economical option.
Paying by direct debit offers the security that your bills will always be paid on time, avoiding late payment charges. But you will have to make sure that you have enough money in your bank account - which can be a problem if you're on a tight budget.
Although some providers, such as Virgin Media (www.Virginmedia.com), charge as much as £5 a month for other payment methods, there are alternatives available.
If you prefer to pay your bills each month in person, the Post Office allows its broadband customers to pay over the counter in any branch. Choose to pay by cash, cheque or credit/debit card for your internet service, at no extra cost. This can be a great budgeting tool and offers many people peace of mind.
Reading broadband reviews is a great way to make sure that you find a provider to suit your needs. Once you've found your chosen supplier, simply compare broadband packages to find the best deal.
