Guide to broadband deals

There are loads of special broadband offers around at the moment, but how can you be really sure that you’re getting good value for money, and with so many deals available, how do you know which one is right for you?

Broadband providers offer special deals to get you to sign a contract - so you might get three month’s free broadband but be tied to that ISP for 18 months - so it’s important that you consider how much you will be paying once the offer has expired. That’s why we compare total first year costs at BroadbandChoices.co.uk.

Switching broadband provider can save you up to £135 on your bills, but before signing up to any new deal you need to consider your needs as a user. Do you need superfast broadband or will an up to 8Mb connection be sufficient? Are you a heavy download who needs an extra allowance each month? Are you a technophobe who will need regular cheap, reliable technical support? These are all questions that you need to ask yourself before committing to a long contract.

O2 Broadband - Three month's free broadband

You can get three month’s free broadband from award-winning ISP O2 Broadband (www.O2.co.uk) when you sign up to either its Premium or Pro packages - offering potential savings of up to £66.

Both packages offer speeds of up to 20Mb with “unlimited” downloads subject to a very generous fair usage policy, a free wireless router and inclusive McAfee security. And if you’re an existing O2 customer, you can even get a discount on your monthly bill.

The Premium package normally costs £9.79 a month for O2 customers or £14.68 for non-customers, while the Pro package - which comes with prioritised customer service and an upload speed of up to 2.5Mb - normally costs £17.13 a month for O2 customers or £22.02 for non-customers.

Suitability

O2 Broadband has won a host of awards since it was launched in 2007 - including being named Which? Best Buy this year - and is suitable for a whole range of users; if you’re an online gamer or heavy downloader you can take full advantage of the high speeds and generous fair usage policy; or if you’re a technophobe, the award-winning, free, UK-based support will be perfect for you.

BT Broadband - Three month's free broadband

BT Broadband (www.BT.com) is currently offering customers three month’s free broadband when they bring their calls back to BT.

That means that anyone ordering either a broadband and call bundle or a triple play package with broadband, calls and BT Vision will get three months of BT Total Broadband absolutely free.

On an 18 month contract BT Total Broadband normally starts at £7.78 for the first three months then £15.65 a month for Option 1, which comes with speeds of up to 8Mb, a 10GB download allowance and a free BT Home Hub. Option 2 normally costs £13.69 for the first three months then £20.54 a month and comes with 8Mb broadband, a 20GB allowance and a BT Home Hub, while Option 3 costs £18.59 for the first three months then £24.46 a month with 8Mb broadband, “unlimited” downloads subject to a fair usage policy and a BT Home Hub and Hub Phone included.

This means that if you took your calls back to BT you could save up to £55.77 on your broadband.

Suitability

Because you have to bring your calls back to BT to qualify for this offer, it is best suited to someone already wanting to return to BT. BT Broadband is reliable but you could get cheaper calls elsewhere.

If you already have a BT line and calls you could save £10 by adding Total Broadband Option 1 or £30 by adding Total Broadband Option 3.

Sky Broadband - A year's free broadband with Sky HD

Sky Broadband (www.Sky.com) currently has two offers running.

If you’re interested in HD television you could get free line rental for a whole year, as well as a discount on your Sky+HD box and even a month’s free HD pack.

Sky’s line rental is currently £10 a month - so you could save yourself £120 on line rental, as well as getting an online saving of £150 off your Sky+HD box - now only £49 online, and save a further £9.75 on your first month’s HD pack. You will also qualify for free installation, saving you an extra £30 - a total saving of £309.75.

The offer is available to all new customers joining Sky and taking a Sky Entertainment pack plus the HD pack. With the free Sky line you can also add Sky Talk Freetime at no extra cost, which comes with free evening and weekend UK landline calls, and even “free broadband” in the form of Sky’s Broadband Base, which comes with speeds of up to 2Mb and a 2GB download allowance.

If you sign up to the free line rental offer you can also qualify for another Sky deal, giving customers £50 of Tesco vouchers when they sign up online.

Suitability

This main deal is obviously best suited to telly-addicts who want to get the most out of their TV with HD. Anyone already looking to sign up to Sky’s HD service could save a packet by taking advantage of this offer.

Remember though, that you also need to have a HD compatible TV for Sky’s HD service to work.

Even if you don’t want the HD deal, you can still get the £50 Tesco voucher when you join Sky online and also get a £15 discount on your connection fee.
