BT has upgraded many of its exchanges to ADSL2+ technology to boost the broadband speeds it offers from 8Mb to 20Mb in upgraded exchanges.

By the start of 2012, around 80% of properties could access BT's up to 20Mb service, leaving 20% of the population still only able to access BT's 8Mb package. However, BT is continuing its network upgrade opening up 20Mb broadband to more of the population.

Where available, the new 20Mb broadband speed is offered to all new customers. Existing BT customers will also be able to upgrade, though you will have to sign a new contract.

As well as increasing download speeds, the upgraded network offers uploads at speeds of up to 1Mb.

BT is the UK’s largest broadband provider with approaching six million customers. It has been rolling out its fibre optic network in what BT claim is one of the fastest roll-outs in the world. BT Infinity packages offer speeds of up to 40Mb and 100Mb broadband and will be available to around 40% of the UK by the end of 2012, rising to two-thirds of the population by 2014.

A number of other UK broadband providers also deliver speeds of up to 20Mb and higher, with Virgin Media (www.Virginmedia.com) offering up to 50Mb and 100Mb broadband connections over its cable network. Virgin Media regularly comes out top in Ofcom broadband speed tests - delivering actual speeds of between 85-100% of the advertised top speeds.

BE broadband (www.Bethere.co.uk) also performs well in Ofcom speed tests and offers 24Mb connections on its Unlimited and Pro packages.
