BT Broadband download limits

Answer: If you sign up for BT Broadband (www.BT.com), you will have a choice of different broadband packages.

Options 1 comes with a 10GB monthly download allowance, which should be fine for relatively low internet users, and Option 2 has been upgraded to 40GB. Broadbandchoices.co.uk research at the start of 2010 found that 50% of consumers downloaded an average of 10GB or less each month.

But you need to remember that everyday internet use like viewing web pages, sending emails and uploading pictures to social networking sites also counts towards your monthly limit. And if you regularly catch up on your favourite TV shows using services like the BBC iPlayer, download music and movies or play online games, then you'll probably need a higher allowance.

BT Option 3 comes with an “unlimited” broadband connection, though it is still subject to a fair usage policy. This means that if you regularly exceed your “limit” you could have your connection slowed down or be asked to upgrade to a more appropriate package. However, this affects very few users - fair usage policies are actually designed to protect the majority of customers from a few excessive users.

BT also launched a range of new fibre optic broadband packages at the start of 2010. BT Infinity packages come with superfast speeds of up to 40Mb, with Option 1 offering a 20GB monthly download allowance or an “unlimited” plan for Option 2 customers - though again, this is subject to a fair usage policy.
