Satellite broadband

Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. Like ADSL but with equal upload and download speeds.

Server

A program in a central computer that sends and receives data according to requests sent by computers that are logged on.

Spam

Unwanted, unsolicited emails sent to massive lists of internet users. They can carry viruses but are most often a simple nuisance.

Filters your emails, sending spam to a separate folder.

Spyware

Installed on computers via unauthorised programs or through a virus, spyware collects personal information on users, but can be removed.

Static IP address

A numerical address for your computer that doesn’t change each time you log on to the internet. You need a static IP address to remotely access your PC or run your own email server. See IP address.
