Tesco fibre optic broadband

Tesco hasn’t yet revealed plans to provide customers with a fibre broadband connection.

Tesco (www.Tesco.net) has an ongoing relationship with Cable & Wireless, with the supermarket giant using the telecoms company’s network to provide its regular broadband service.

Although Cable & Wireless Worldwide owns the UK’s largest fibre network, boasting 20,500km of cable, Tesco are yet to reveal any plans to offer customers a fibre optic broadband connection.

£830million Government strategy for Europe’s best fibre network

In 2010, the UK government pledged £830million to create the best superfast broadband network in Europe. Since then, the fibre race has been heating-up.

BT and Virgin Media have both invested multi-millions in developing their fibre network and are comfortably leading the pack in delivering speeds of up to 30Mb, 60MB and and even up to 100Mb broadband to the masses - but many others have also entered the race with their own fibre packages.

Benefits of fibre

Fibre optic broadband is described as “futureproof”. It is designed to deliver massive amounts of data at lightning fast speeds. Unlike traditional copper wire, it does not experience much of a decline in connection speed as distance from the telephone exchange increases.

• Average connection speeds on a fibre connection are usually 85-100% of the advertised speed - versus just 45-55% with copper wire connections
